2003 Diary

Woke up, not feeling ill and made the brave decision to "battle severe illness to complete escapade". Drove back to Lanbedr after we were sure I was not going to have a relapse. Had a sandwich and crisps before setting off (Food at last). Cycled on main road to Barmouth but Eddie left at first opportunity for an off road...

Woke up in the morning not feeling the best. Went down to have a cup of tea. Definitely not feeling well. Not to go into the gory details, but the tea did not settle. Went back to bed and staff at hostel kindly allowed me to stay there (should have vacated by ten). Not sure what the cause of illness...

Climbed over Capel Curig for the second time. Then up to Ogwen Dam. Saw views of Tryffn and The Gliders. We cycled down the valley and picked up the old railway line to Bangor. Another first for the trip, Eddies first puncture (After my earlier scare). He blamed it on a mountain cyclist cutting him up (He originally thought...

The previous day's exertions made cycling difficult due to lack of energy and unnecessary hills. Lost the route and had to take detour around Mold and use A494. Met veteran cyclist in Rothin and a new member of the carrot growers association. Must have sensed the farmer in Eddie as preceded to chat to him for ½ hour. Climbed over...

Another long day (longer than calculated, Map reading course becoming essential). Woke early to find old lady sleeping outside door. Perhaps not the best thing to do in a hostel full off partially sighted people. Slaidburn to Preston made good time with the mist still in the valleys. Again, couldn't find suitable breakfast stop so sat on a bench in...

Due to the excessive exertions of mountain climbing the previous day Eddie altered the route to avoid a very hilly section (Note to self; Send Eddie mountaineering more often). Took the ferry again, this time in the opposite direction. Stopped for tea and cakes at Kirkby Lonsdale. Lunch was on Moorland approaching Bowland Forrest. Fatigue getting...

Yippee.... A Day Off, No cycling, Rest. So Eddie and Rob choose to walk up a mountain (Go figure). Helvelyn, in fact via Squirrel Edge returning by Crisedale. Rations provided by the hostel for a small fee (Apparently small rations for the hungry mountaineers as well). They watched Arsenal beat Man City 2-1 in a pub in Windemere. Dawn...

First good news, tyre still inflated. Luck is on my side. Eddies route planning needs serious alteration. Neither of us have a mountain bike but nevertheless the off road route was taken, including streams and rocks. Worth the stunning views of Skiddow and Basenthwaite apparently. Met up with Dawn at Keswick, which was very busy and decided to stop...

Forgot to take my blood pressure pill today but thankfully no major effects. The route from Dumfries to Carlisle was fairly flat, so we were averaging speeds of 13mph. Stopped at Annan for Rock Cake and refreshments. Contacted Eddies friend Rob to arrange details of visit during our stop at Hawkeshead. On leaving Annan, accosted by Drunk telling us...

A colder and windier day with the odd spots of rain but still not what we were expecting. Followed the expert advice from the couple at the B&B who were keen cyclists and followed the A75 toward Cree. A slow climb up to Gatehouse station. Picturesque views of a viaduct and pleasant downhill to Gatehouse of Fleet. Cup of tea...
