Callander to Ayr
Dep. 06:45 Arr. 18:30
Distance 99 miles
A very, very, very long days cycling with a very early start. Too asleep to take great advantage of the free breakfast, but never mind. Again another overcast day but sunny later on in the day. The "flat" day's cycling (See Rule 23- Day2) started off with two steep hills. Coming down the second thought we might have encountered our first Scottish Rain but it was in fact the interaction of the mist and us at high speed. Quite chilly though. Planned on a cooked breakfast to sustain body but nowhere suitable to be found. Stopped for Lunch at Burger King after an exhilarating 2-mile stretch of dual carriageway (well I thought so, Eddie vowed never to go near such a road again). Good cycling on another converted railway line (They really do make the best cycle paths) by Lochwinnog. Eddie managed to scare an old lady walking with her husband by over taking them quietly. The irate man cursed him with the words "give us a ring" (referring I presume to a bike bell). He also caused a little boy to fall off his bike as he was very kindly trying to get out of our way. All I can say about his injury is only you fella's out there would understand how much it must of hurt. We made sure he was OK before cycling on before his parents caught up. Kilwinney and Irvine cycle route passed through less desirable places which improved our average speed. Flat cycling along front at Troon and Ayr. Fatigue setting in by now as Eddie tried to get run over at one junction in Prestwick and fall into me at another. Reached Ayr B&B too exhausted to do that extra mile and make it a round 100. Pub grub to end the day.
